Going Astray

Every time I go away to work for the summer, I host a Going Astray party. It sounds more adventurous and interesting than plain old 'going away'.

Last night was Going Astray 3: Fire and Ice. We had a bonfire and blueberry rum slush to go with a potluck. It was a small event because I didn't think about it until Thursday, so those popular people with active social lives already had plans. Not me, of course.

It was a hot day, nearly 30 degrees (celsius), so I didn't feel like cooking. I made a simple pasta salad from the Vegetarian Planet cookbook. I think everyone else had the same idea. The other 3 entrees were all pasta salads. A situation which my friend Damon claims is the whole point of potlucks.

I really enjoyed the mellowness of the evening. There is something about sitting around a fire that allows people to talk more openly than any other situation. In the co-op, where it seems like everything is political, even toothbrushing, it is refreshing to have conversations that are purely social in nature.

Thanks to Magda, who gave me a lovely Sharpie tatoo of a butterfly with the phrase "Keri in Flight". Too bad it has washed off already. Thanks to Stephen for lighting the controversial fire. And congratulations to Jo, whose application for immigration to Canada (from the US) has finally been approved. It was a three-year wait, but her life will finally move out of limbo and on towards the future.
